Peskov: Russia wants national currencies settlements with Turkey

MOSCOW, Aug 13 (PRIME) -- Russia is willing to use national currencies for trade settlements with Turkey, but the issue should be explored thoroughly, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday.

“The issue of using national currencies for mutual trade operations has been raised by the Russian side at different levels including the highest level. President (Vladimir) Putin repeatedly said that it is possible and even reasonable,” he said.

“Of course, the issue needs thorough consideration and assessment, but this is what we seek for in our bilateral trade and economic relations.”

Peskov also said that the current economic situation in Turkey has not hurt the state’s mutual projects with Russia yet.

He added that speculations about the possibility of Russia’s economic aid to Turkey are inappropriate.

Earlier in August, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara was preparing to begin settlements in national currencies with its major trade partners including China, Russia, Iran and Ukraine on the back of a crisis in Turkey’s relations with the U.S.
